Penang is a shopper’s paradise for the people who love to shop and have a good hand at bargaining. There are a lot of shopping malls, roadside stalls and night markets (pasar malam) in Penang that offer endless range of products at reasonable and negotiable prices. The main shopping centres are located on Penang road, Jalan Gurney, Tanjong Tokong, Campbell Street and Burmah road in Penang. The roadside shops more popular as one can negotiate with the price. Penangite’s have got a great affection for sweets, cookies and pastries. There are a lot of shops selling a variety of traditional Penang sweets, cookies, candies and pastries. Tau Sar Peah is a button-shaped cookie truly loved by all the local Penangite’s and foreigners. Beh teh saw (a pastry cookie mixed with sesame and molasses), soh peah (pink or yellow crumbly pastry stuffed with red bean paste and decorated with red Chinese characters), phong peah (crumbly biscuits richly stuffed with sweet filling) coconut cookies and candies, sugared tamarinds and crispy banana fritters are some of the popular goodies adored by most of the local residents. In addition to this preserved persimmons, sour plum syrup, sugared cuttlefish, crispy satay fish, rojak sauce and durian dodol are also purchased by most of the people.

Tau sar peah

Tau sar peah or tambun biscuit is a button shapped sweet and flaky cookie stuffed with mung bean filling. Completely enjoyed by the Penangite’s, the cookie is also sometimes stuffed in with pandan flavours and gula melaka filling. Tau sar peah is available at Xiang Phing Bakery, Sin Hock Seng, Loong Num, Lee Hoay Seng and Hoe Peng.

Nutmeg

Nutmeg is a popular spice, food and medicine sold in Penang. It is avocado or pear shaped and is widely grown in areas surrounding the hill slopes of Balik Pulau. The spice is generally sold in dried, pickled, powdered, creamed or liquid form. Nutmeg is available in a lot of shops at Chowrasta on Penang road, in a few supermarkets and also in groceries and souvenir shops along the Kek Lok Si temple road. Shopping complexes in Penang provides each and everything under one roof. Pasar Malam (Night Markets)

Pasar Malam or the Night markets are located near the housing communities and modern villages. These markets are mostly crowded by the office workers. Pasar Malam or the Night markets generally open at 6:00 pm and close by 10:00 pm.
